Iran top-ranked Asian futsal team in AMF rankings

Iran men’s national futsal team has become Asia’s best in the latest Asociación Mundial de Futsal (AMF) rankings and landed in the fifth spot in the world, thanks to impressive performances at the 10th edition of the Grand Prix de Futsal in Brazil.

According to the latest classification published by the AMF, which is the governing body of futsal, the Iranian team collected 1,621 points, jumping two spots and ranking first in Asia.

Japan claimed the 10th slot in the latest AMF rankings with 1,405 points. The Samurais are followed by Thailand and Kazakhstan, which occupy the 17th and 19th spots respectively with 1,314 and 1,290 points.

Powerhouse Spain is the top-ranked futsal team in the world with 1,922 points. Brazilians amassed 1,909 points to claim the second position, while third-place Russians bagged 1,746 points. Italy stands fourth with 1,726 points.

On October 8, Iran’s futsal team conceded a 3-10 loss to Brazil in the final match of the 10th edition of the Grand Prix de Futsal staged at the Olimpico Engenheiro Wagner do Nascimento sports hall in Brazil's Uberaba,  finishing as vice champion.

 The Grand Prix de Futsal was first held in 2005, and is held annually in Brazil.

Brazil is the most successful team in the tournament with nine titles. Spain won the futsal competition once in 2010.

Iran finished runner-up once in 2007, another time in 2009, and the third time in 2015. The Islamic Republic stood on the bronze podium in 2013 and 2014. It claimed the fourth place in 2010 and the following year.
