Pakistani air raids leave at least 15 terrorists dead
Pakistan says its fighter jets have pounded militant positions along the northwestern border with Afghanistan, killing over a dozen militants.
The airstrikes were conducted on Saturday in different areas of the Tirah Vally in the restive province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where Taliban militants and local insurgents are active, AFP reported.
“At least 15 militants were killed and several injured while three hideouts were destroyed in precise aerial strikes,” said an unnamed local security official.
The military has intensified its operation against militant hideouts in the violence-wracked regions bordering with Afghanistan since last June, when a deadly raid on the Karachi International Airport ended the government’s faltering peace talks with the pro-Taliban militants.
In a deadly militant attack on December 16, 2014, a group of pro-Taliban gunmen stormed an army-run school in Peshawar and killed about 150 people, including 132 students, leaving some 120 students injured.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in the so-called war on terror. Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
