Turkey asks Iran to increase gas exports

Iran says Turkey has asked for more Iranian gas to be able to cope with the unprecedented harsh winter conditions.

Iran said on Saturday that Turkey has asked for more Iranian gas to be able to cope with the unprecedented harsh winter conditions.

Manouchehr Taheri, the director for dispatching affairs of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), has been quoted by the media that the current volume of Iran’s gas exports to Turkey stands at 31 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d).

Taheri did not explain whether and when Iran would start to respond to Turkey’s request.

He emphasized that Iran is currently importing about 28 mcm/d of gas from Turkmenistan, adding that the volume will increase to 30 mcm/d “if Iran faces harsh winter conditions”.

He said the region is going to experience harsh winter this year, adding that NIGC has already devised preparatory measures to render proper services to the nation, IRNA reported.

He said the NIGC has been storing up about one billion cubic meters of gas in the pipelines with another 2.1 billion cubic meters being stored in two underground reservoirs.

The official noted that Iran’s gas consumption volume almost doubled to 320 million cubic meters a day last week due to cold weather.

According to the official, the volume of Iran’s gas imports and exports stood almost at the same volume this year, IRNA’s report added.
