Saudi king 'secret wife' gets multimillion-pound payout
London's High Court has ruled that a woman who says she was secretly married to Saudi Arabia's late King Fahd is entitled to receive a multimillion-pound payout.
Palestinian-born Janan Harb says she married Fahd in 1968 at the age of 19 when he was a prince and the interior minister.
The 68-year-old, who is now a British national, has claimed that Fahd, who ascended to the throne in 1982 and died in 2005, had promised to support her financially for the rest of her life.
Harb has said that ruler's son Prince Abdul Aziz bin Fahd had met her at a hotel in the British capital in 2003 when the king was seriously ill, adding that the prince told her he would honor his father's promise, and had offered to give her £12 million plus two luxurious London flats.
Judge Peter Smith on Tuesday decided to accept the claim and ruled that Harb is entitled to be paid more than £15 million (USD 23 million), plus the deeds of the two flats, that are believed to be worth £5 million each.
The woman took legal action after claiming that she had received neither the money nor the properties.
The prince, who failed to appear in court despite the judge’s order that he should give evidence in person, denied Harb’s claim in written statements to the court. He can appeal the ruling.
Harb said King Fahd's family was opposed to their relationship since she was from a Christian family, adding, “Fahd was concerned about how this would be viewed by the Saudi public.”
The woman said she converted to Islam before the wedding.
