Osborne calls for changes to membership in EU

British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne

British Chancellor George Osborne has called for drastic changes to Britain's membership of the European Union.

Addressing a group of about 1,200 German industry bosses at an event in Berlin, he said: ”We want Britain to remain in a reformed European Union, but it needs to be a European Union that works better for all the citizens of Europe - and works better for Britain too," he said.

Earlier, British Prime Minister David Cameron promised to renegotiate the terms of Britain's EU membership before holding an in-out referendum by the end of 2017, and Germany plays a key role in those negotiations as the bloc's largest economy.

According to Osborne, the existing legal framework does not support that relationship.

“Countries that have not adopted the euro as their currency should not be discriminated against,” he added.

"There will be cases where non-euro members want to participate in developments like the banking union," Osborne said.

EU membership has long been a contentious topic in Britain. Eurosceptics, who believe the UK would be better off outside the political and economic union, seek the UK's withdrawal from the EU.

Various polls have indicated that the British public is divided on the issue.
