11 civilians injured in attempted Boko Haram attack on Chadian army post
Military forces in Chad have repelled an attack by Takfiri Boko Haram militants on an army post in the country’s Lake Chad region.
The attack was attempted on Sunday, when two bombers were killed and a third one managed to detonate his explosives.
The Chadian government said in a statement, “Two members of Boko Haram were neutralized and a third blew themselves up, wounding 11 civilians, Sunday during an attempted attack on the Bougouma army post.”
Boko Haram, which is mainly based in Nigeria, has recently expanded its terrorist activities to the African country’s neighbors, including Chad.
Tens of thousands of Nigerian refugees and Chadians displaced by Boko Haram violence have sought shelter in Lake Chad, which is shared by Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad.
A triple bomb attack on October 10 also killed 41 people at Baga Sola in Chad.
In another incident on October 6, the Takfiri Boko Haram militant group killed 11 Chadian soldiers and wounded 17 others in an attack in the country’s Lake Chad region.
Boko Haram started its militancy against the Nigerian government in 2009.
Since the beginning of 2015, the Chadian army has been involved in a regional offensive against the militants, after their attacks spread beyond Nigeria’s borders to neighboring countries, including Chad.
In June, five African countries, Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin, agreed to set up a joint military force to battle Boko Haram; Chad is the country with the highest number of forces in the regional 8,700-strong military task force.
At least 17,000 people have been killed, mainly in Nigeria, and more than 2.5 million made homeless over the past six years due to the Boko Haram militancy.
