A Syrian girl has been killed in a mortar attack carried out by the Jaysh al-Islam militant group in the capital, Damascus.

Syria’s official news agency SANA quoted a police source as saying on Saturday that the mortar shell landed on the residential neighborhood of Qusour. Another civilian was injured in the attack.

In Ghouta, eastern Rif-Dimashq Province, also known as Damascus countryside, militants carried out a similar attack earlier on the same day, hitting residential neighborhoods in the capital and its countryside. One civilian was also killed and a dozen others were injured.

The news of the mortar attack comes as the Syrian army successfully carried out operations to liberate several villages and towns, including Maraen, Hamimeyeh, Hamidah, Hamidi, Meshrfeh and Sabhiyeh on the southwestern outskirt of Aleppo city, northwestern Syria.

Positions of Takfiri militants in the towns of Maskana, Sheikh Ahmad and Um Arkila in Aleppo Province were also targeted by the Syrian air force.

Syrian warplanes also conducted combat sorties over hideouts of Takfiri Daesh terrorists in the villages of Khanaifis, Rasm al-Sabaa and Gzaileh in the countryside of the ancient city of Palmyra, which is located about 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Aleppo.

In Damascus countryside, the terrorists suffered fatalities in similar airstrikes on Daesh positions in the city of Daraiya.

Moreover, Dara’a Province in the southwest of the country saw a terrorist command center in Balad area destroyed by the army.

The conflict in Syria has taken toll on the lives of over 250,000 since March 2011, according to the UN. More than 12 million people, including over 5.6 million children, also remain in need of humanitarian assistance.

The foreign-sponsored militancy has displaced 7.6 million Syrians.
