Lebanon security forces arrest Daesh Takfiri group member
Lebanon’s security forces have arrested a Daesh Takfiri element, saying that he has confessed to transferring funds to the terrorist group operating in Syria.
The Lebanese intelligence agency, General Security Directorate, said in a statement on Saturday that the Lebanese detainee has admitted that the funds transfer had taken place through Daesh sleeper cells in Lebanon.
The statement also said the arrested individual has confessed to plotting an attack against the Lebanese army in the northern city of Tripoli.
The individual said he had also participated in fighting against the Lebanese army in Tripoli.
The General Security Directorate also said the detainee has been referred to relevant judiciary authorities for further investigations.
On October 12, the Lebanese army arrested Ibrahim Mutaweh, a senior member of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front terrorist group, in the town of Arsal, northeastern Lebanon.
Terrorists affiliated with al-Nusra and Daesh have been active on the outskirts of Arsal, located on the Lebanese border with Syria.
The terrorists briefly overran the Lebanese border town in August last year. However, the Takfiri elements later withdrew from the area but took several dozen Lebanese army and police forces hostage, four of whom have since been executed.
Lebanon has experienced the spillover of militancy in neighboring Syria, where foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists are operating against the government in Damascus.
