At least 27 people have been killed and 155 others sustained injuries in a firework blast in the Romanian capital Bucharest.

The explosion occurred late on Friday at a venue called Colectiv Club, where some 400 people, including children, were inside the building at the time of the incident, Reuters reported.

According to an eyewitness, fireworks inside the club went wrong and a pillar and the ceiling of the building were set ablaze before a huge blast happened.

The raging fire and thick smoke caused by the explosion made the panicked audience rush to the exits, causing a crush.

“There was a stampede of people running out of the club,” another witness said.

Some of the seriously wounded people were taken to nearby hospitals while those with milder injuries were treated on pavements outside of the building.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis also expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the families of the victims.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic event that occurred tonight. It is a very sad moment for our nation,” Iohannis wrote on his Facebook page.

According to local media, the National Committee for Emergency Situations has announced an emergency meeting on the incident for Saturday morning. All ministers have reportedly been summoned.
