Iran, Pakistan urge joint action against terrorism

Iran and Pakistan have underlined the need for concerted efforts between the two Muslim countries to fight terrorism and extremism.

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani and Pakistan Prime Minister Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz made the remarks during a meeting in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

Underscoring the need for joint efforts between Tehran and Islamabad to confront the Takfiri ideology, Shamkhani said “poverty, underdevelopment and suppression of anti-imperialist potentialities of youths by certain autocratic governments in the region” have paved the ground for Daesh and other terrorists groups to recruit militants.

“The prolonged and costly presence of the West under the pretext of establishing security in the region has had adverse effects,” Shamkhani said.

Stating that Iran's security is intertwined with Pakistan's, Shamkhani called for further bilateral security and border cooperation.

The Pakistani official, for his part, highlighted the influential role of Iran and Pakistan in the settlement of regional crises and said that confronting common threats, including terrorism, extremism and border insecurities, necessitates closer cooperation between the two countries.

Shamkhani arrived in Islamabad for a two-day official visit on Wednesday. The Iranian official has met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, and newly appointed Pakistani National Security Adviser Nasir Khan Janjua to discuss bilateral ties regional developments and the fight against terrorism.
