Israel raises possibility of more hostile measures in al-Quds
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has raised the possibility of revoking certain rights of a proportion of Palestinians living in the occupied territories.
According to unidentified Israeli officials, Netanyahu spoke of the possibility of revoking the resident status and travel rights of some Palestinians living in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Monday.
Palestinian officials condemned the potential move as ethnic cleansing, arguing it will deny Palestinians their fundamental rights.
Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said the step, if adopted, would deprive Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied al-Quds of the most basic rights and services and provoke confrontations.
“This alarming escalation, an inhuman and illegal measure, must be stopped immediately,” Ashrawi said in a statement.
The development came on the same day as Israeli forces fatally shot a 17-year-old Palestinian teenager, identified as Iyad Rawhi Jaradat, during clashes in Beit Einun village, located five kilometers (three miles) northeast of the southern West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron).
Raed al-Saeed, a doctor at al-Ahli Hospital in al-Khalil, said Jaradat was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility, adding that X-ray scans showed that the bullet had lodged in his head.
Earlier on Monday, Israeli forces shot and killed a 19-year-old Palestinian teenager, identified as Saad Muhammad Youssef al-Atrash, after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli soldier outside the Ibrahimi Mosque in al-Khalil, located 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of al-Quds.
The Palestinian Health Ministry says at least 60 Palestinians have lost their lives and 7,100 others sustained injuries at the hands of Israeli forces since the beginning of the month.
At least ten Israelis have also been killed and 130 others injured during this time.
The fresh wave of tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories was triggered by the Israeli regime’s imposition in August of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.
Palestinians are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers, who frequently storm the al-Aqsa Mosque.
They say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound.
