Iran extends condolences to quake-hit nations in South Asia
Iran has extended its condolences to Pakistan, Afghanistan and India over a strong earthquake that claimed hundreds of lives in the three countries, saying the Islamic Republic is ready to provide humanitarian aid to people in the affected regions.
On Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham expressed the country’s sympathy with the governments and nations of the three South Asia countries, expressing hope that the casualties and material damage from the disaster would be contained as much as possible.
She also said Iran was ready to provide immediate humanitarian supplies and relief aid to the quake-hit areas.
An initial magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Monday, and was followed by seven aftershocks, measuring as high as 4.8 on the Richter scale.
The bulk of the casualties were reported from Pakistan, where 229 people were killed and more than 1,800 were injured. The overall death toll from Pakistan, Afghanistan and India stands at 306.
The main temblor, which lasted at least one minute, also shook buildings in India and was felt in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
The death toll is expected to rise as the most severely affected areas are very remote, and communications have been cut off.
In a Monday message to his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts, President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Amir Mohsen Zia’ee also said the body was ready to immediately dispatch relief and medical teams to those countries.
