Russian search engine Yandex opening Iran office
Russia’s largest internet search engine, Yandex, is to open offices in Iran, says Iranian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi.
Vaezi made the announcement during a meeting with Russian Minister of Communications Nikolai Nikiforov, in Tehran on Sunday.
Furthering cooperation in the fields of research and development, network security, social networks, search engines, postal services were the main topics discussed in the meeting.
During the meeting, it was agreed that Yandex would open an office in Iran to optimize its services for the Iranian people, he added.
Stressing Russia’s successful breakthroughs in the field of social networks, Vaezi noted that Iran wishes to boost its domestic social networks.
Russia’s "Telegram social network... currently has 13 to 14 million users in Iran and is active, without restrictions, parallel to the communication ministry’s policies,” he noted.
Vaezi also said that in the upcoming BRICS summit, to be held in New York in December, decisions will be made concerning monopoly over the internet.
In the summit, Iran will get engaged in efforts to reduce the monopoly of managing the internet with Russia and other countries sympathetic to this cause, he said.
“Many countries believe that the internet [management] must not be exclusive, even many European countries support this cause as well,” he added.
According to Vaezi, other topics covered during the meeting included the internet of things, big data management, fifth generation mobile and wireless networks, as well as the smart city concept.
