Taliban militants kill district chief in NW Afghanistan

The Taliban militant group has killed the police chief of the Ghormach district in Afghanistan’s northwestern province of Faryab a few days after capturing the area, a report says.

The militant group took control of Ghormach and detained the police chief along with several other security personnel during an attack on October 18.

An unnamed official said on Friday that the district police chief Abdul Majeed Galimbafi was killed by the militants, Afghanistan’s Pajhwok news agency reported.

Afghan Red Crescent Society head for Faryab Province, Khal Mirza Sabori, also confirmed Galimbafi’s death, saying that he and his team had traveled to Ghormach to transfer the bodies of 13 police officers killed by Taliban militants.

On Thursday, Afghan officials said Taliban militants had assassinated the governor of Jaghatu district in the eastern province of Ghazni in an ambush attack.

Afghanistan continues to face insecurity 14 years after the US and its allies invaded the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. Although the Taliban militant group was removed from power as a result of the invasion, many areas in the country are still threatened by insecurity.

Afghan forces have been engaged in military operations across the country to end the Taliban-led militancy and violence gripping the Asian country.
