A senior Iranian official says collective measures should be adopted to counter the threat of Takfiri terrorist groups in the region.

In a meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Sunday, Ali Akbar Velayati, who is a top adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, commended on Lebanon’s resistance against the Zionists, as well as terrorists and Takfiri groups.

“Like some regional countries, Lebanon is also under the pressure from Zionists as well as terrorist and Takfiri groups. We know that there is no solution to these problems but regional cooperation,” Velayati said.

He stated that Iran and Lebanon share common views on the ongoing developments in Syria, noting that the two countries are opposed to military intervention in the country.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured, according to the United Nations.

The Lebanese foreign minister, for his part, said regional countries should strengthen cooperation in the face of Takfiri terrorist groups.

He praised Iran’s crucial role in the region and its fight against terrorism.

Lebanon’s security inevitable necessity

In a Sunday meeting with the Lebanese foreign minister, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said the eradication of terrorism in Syria would influence security in Lebanon’s border areas.

It is an inevitable necessity to maintain stability and security in Lebanon, Shamkhani added.

He said real security has been restored to Lebanon thanks to efforts by the country’s army, the resistance movement, as well as the Lebanese nation and political groups.

The SNSC secretary also stated that some extra-regional countries are determined to cause insecurity in Lebanon.

Shamkhani expressed Iran’s support for stability, security and democracy in Lebanon.
