Two kids, including toddler, gang-raped in Indian capital
Two minor girls, including a toddler, have been gang-raped in separate incidents in India’s capital of New Delhi, said a senior local police official, in an astonishing case even for India, where gang-rapes are almost frequent.
“The first incident took place in west Delhi’s Nangloi area on Friday evening when a two-and-a-half-year-old girl was abducted from near her home and gang-raped by two men,” Xinhua quoted the police official, whom it did not identify, as saying on Saturday.
The official was further quoted as saying that the child victim was found lying unconscious and bleeding at a nearby park, noting that she was transferred to a government hospital where her condition is listed as serious.
In the second incident, said the police official, a five-year-old girl was gang-raped by three men on Friday in east Delhi’s Anand Vihar neighborhood.
“While no one has been arrested in connection with the first incident, all three suspects in the second incident were nabbed,” the official underlined.
The developments prompted Director of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal to emphasize that sexual assaults in the Indian capital had reached “epidemic proportions.”
She was cited in local press reports as saying that the younger victim was still “bleeding profusely” and had been admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital.
“The two-and-half-year-old had marks and bites all over her body and she was left bleeding,” Maliwal added. “As a citizen of Delhi, I’m extremely ashamed at what has happened.”
She also announced plans to meet New Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor as well as the police commissioner to seek coordinated action to avert such prevalent abuse.
The latest child rape crimes in Delhi came just days after another four-year-old girl was brutally raped and left “unconscious, naked and bleeding” on the tracks close to her house in northwest Delhi’s Keshav Puram.
The persistence of gang rapes in India’s capital comes despite government efforts to enact tougher laws against sexual assaults in the wake of the December 2012 gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men.
