Munich Security Conference to convene meeting in Tehran
The Munich Security Conference (MSC) is set to convene a core group meeting in the Iranian capital Tehran to discuss regional developments.
The meeting, co-hosted by the MSC and the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies, will be held on Saturday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier along with a number of foreign ministers and high-ranking officials from various countries will attend the gathering to exchange views on the latest developments in the Middle East region.
According to the MSC website, the participants will focus on the crisis in Syria, which began in 2011, as well as Tehran's global and regional role following the landmark nuclear agreement clinched between the Islamic Republic and six world powers.
Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia – plus Germany finalized the text of the agreement dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in the Austrian capital Vienna on July 14.
Based on the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the lifting of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.
Regarding the Saturday meeting, MSC Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger has said it can pave the way for further cooperation between Iran and the West.
"The Vienna agreement focused solely on the question of the Iranian nuclear program... Now is precisely the time to find out whether and how Iran and the West can cooperate more closely on other issues as well. We need to discuss possible joint approaches to dealing with the various regional crises, particularly in Syria, with Iranian decision-makers as well," according to Ischinger.
Among the participants in the gathering are Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, the UN deputy special envoy for Syria.
The MSC is a significant annual conference on international security policy, which has been held since 1963.
