Syrian forces launch anti-terror offensive south of Aleppo
Syrian armed forces, backed by Russian air support, have reportedly launched a large-scale military offensive against Takfiri terrorists in the southern countryside of Aleppo, the country’s second-largest city.
On Friday, Syria’s official news agency SANA quoted a military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, as saying that government troops and popular defense groups opened a new front against the militants in the southern suburbs of Aleppo, the capital of a province with the same name in northwestern Syria.
According to the source, Syrian forces had already regained control of the towns of Ebtin and Hadadin al-Gharbiyeh as well as al-Kassarat and al-Madajen areas in the province before beginning the operation.
Syrian soldiers and popular fighters have inflicted heavy losses on the terrorist groups during their advances, the source added.
Meanwhile, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported heavy clashes near the Jebel Azzan region, loctaed about 12 kilometers (eight miles) south of Aleppo city.
Russian fighter jets also provided air cover for Syrian forces during the operation, striking several terrorist positions to facilitate the advance of the army soldiers, according to the UK-based body.
In recent days, Syrian army units and popular fighters have engaged the extremists on several fronts in the country.
On Thursday, the Syrian army also began a counter-terror offensive from the northern and northwestern parts of Homs Province in central Syria.
Syrian troops also carried out several operations elsewhere on the battlefield against the terror groups, including the provinces of Hama, Dara’a and Quneitra, liberating several militant-held areas during their advances.
Syria’s battles against terrorists have entered a new phase after Russia responded a positively to a request from Damascus and began an aerial campaign in late September against positions of the terrorist groups operating in the Arab state over the past four years.
Russia says Daesh Takfiri terrorists appear to be abandoning their bases in Syria, as army forces, backed by Moscow’s airpower, continue to make more gains against the militants on different fronts.
