Brussels police arrest over 100 protesters on sidelines of EU summit

Police have arrested more than a hundred demonstrators who staged a protest rally on the sidelines of the European Union summit in Brussels.

The arrests came after hundreds of NGO workers and trade unionists, joined by regular citizens, marched to the EU Council building. They were holding signs and shouting slogans to voice their concerns over a number of issues, including austerity and human rights. They also protested against a planned free trade agreement between the EU and the US. There are fears that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership could give huge multinational corporations more controlling power than governments. The TTIP is also feared to undermine the EU’s environmental and social regulations.
