Press TV has interviewed Pam Bailey, with Euromid Monitor of Human Rights in Washington, to discuss the refugee crisis in Europe.

The European Union is dealing with a wave of refugees from conflict zones in the Middle East and Africa. Official figures show that over 600,000 people have arrived in Europe so far this year. Some 3,000 have already lost their lives on the perilous journey into the European countries.

Europe has “badly” dealt with the refugee crisis, Bailey said, adding that some European countries are “playing politics” with the issue and have adopted a an inhumane attitude toward the asylum seekers.

The refugees are at particular danger of human trafficking, the activist said.

Bailey also said certain European countries could largely benefit socially and economically by integrating the refugees into the countries instead of keeping them in detention centers.

On Monday, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said “more legal opportunities” must be provided by EU countries to take in refugees.

The European Union currently has a program to take in 160,000 refugees over the next two years. The relocation scheme is “not enough”, said the head of the UN refugee agency.

“You cannot have a technocratic approach to relocation. Without a human approach to relocation, this process could fail.”
