At least thirteen people, including seven children, have been killed in a landslide in Pakistan.

Authorities said on Tuesday that the incident happened in the port city of Karachi, located in the southeastern part of the country.

The victims, according to police, were from three families, living on a plot of land, before the landslide destroyed the area and its surroundings.

Tragedy reportedly struck when they were sleep.

"After up to five hours of rescue work, the 13 bodies of the victims were recovered from the heap of stones and dust," senior police officer Javed Jaskani told AFP.

Authorities say an inquiry by a joint body of police and city officials will be launched soon to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his condolences over the tragic deaths of those killed in the landslide and instructed authorities to aid the families of the victims, Pakistani media reported.

Pakistan is prone to landslides that are usually caused by rainfall and flooding, but Tuesday’s landslide was a rare one as the weather was clear when the slide occurred.
