News in Brief

1. A Palestinian teenager has been left to bleed to death after being shot by Israeli forces in Jerusalem al-Quds. Israeli authorities say they opened fire on 13-year-old Ahmad Manasra and his elder cousin Hassan after the pair tried to stab soldiers. 15-year-old Hassan died on the spot.

2. The Syrian army has made fresh gains against foreign-backed terrorists in the city of Salma, taking control of some areas there. Syrian forces also killed dozens of al-Qaeda-linked militants in Hama province. Meanwhile, Russian fighter jets conducted nearly a dozen airstrikes, pounding terrorist positions in Latakia province.

3. The US-led coalition has airdropped 50 tonnes of weapons and ammunition for anti-Damascus militants in northern Syria. US military officials claim the arms were delivered to those fighting against Daesh terrorists. The airdrop comes barely two weeks after Russia started airstrikes against terrorist positions in Syria.

4. The UN refugee agency says the EU’s current relocation plan for refugees is not enough to deal with the scope of the crisis. The UNHCR said addressing the refugee crisis in Europe requires the cooperation of all European entities. The organization also called on host countries to allow refugees to work.

5. Supporters of the anti-immigrant and anti-Islam group, known as PEGIDA, have rallied in the German city of Dresden against the government’s policy on refugees. The far-right group slammed Chancellor Angela Merkel for accepting a large number of refugees. The rally was met by a pro-refugee counter-protest.

6. A Kosovar opposition lawmaker, who was detained for releasing tear gas in parliament, has been freed. The release of Albin Kurti came a few hours after his supporters hurled rocks at police outside the detention center where he was being held.

7. Ukraine says Russian airlines are no longer authorized to fly into the country. The measure will become effective on October 25. A spokeswoman for the State Air Service in the capital Kiev said Russian airlines can still cross Ukraine’s airspace to other destinations.

8. The United Nations has issued an urgent request for 86-million dollars to deal with the food insecurity in Zimbabwe. The world body said around 1.5 million people in the South African nation need food aid. Food supply has been unstable in Zimbabwe due to its devastating economic downturn.
