A mob attack on a police station on the resort island of Phuket in southern Thailand has left several police cars damaged.

An official said Sunday that the crowd of about 500 people surrounded the Thalang police station on Saturday and threw stones and torched nine squad cars before they were dispersed.

“They torched nine cars – 14 officials were injured and… two villagers injured,” Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada told AFP.

The location of the unrest was not close to any of the tourist spots on the island.

The attack on the police station was reportedly prompted by the death of two young men in what was reported to be a high-speed police chase.

The two victims – Prathomwat Panarak, 22, and a 17-year-old whose name has been withheld – were drug suspects and were riding on a motorcycle at above the speed limit, prompting the chase by a patrol car.

Their motorcycle slammed head-on into another oncoming patrol car. The crash left both victims with severe head injuries and they were pronounced dead upon arrival at Thalang Hospital.

Thalang Police Lt. Col. Amnoy Kraiwuttianan told local media that officers had found 50 meth pills and one kilograms of kratom on the victims at the accident site.
