Nearly 40 people have been killed in three explosions in the Chadian city of Baga Sola near the border with Nigeria.

Government sources said the blasts on Saturday, which killed at least 37 people, were most likely carried out by Nigeria’s Takfiri Boko Haram militant group.

The dead included five attackers. Over 50 others were also injured in the blasts that occurred at about 4:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT).

According to security sources and witnesses, one of the blasts targeted a fish market in Baga Sola and the other two struck a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city on the shores of Lake Chad.

Boko Haram recently killed 11 Chadian soldiers and wounded 17 others in an attack in the country’s Lake Chad region.

Chad Lake is shared by the African countries of Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, which have been threatened by Boko Haram attacks.

Boko Haram, which controls parts of northeastern Nigeria, started its militancy against the Nigerian government in 2009.

Since the start of this year, the Chadian army has been involved in a regional offensive against the terrorists, after their attacks spread across Nigeria's borders to neighboring countries.

Chad is the leading country in the regional 8,700-strong military task force.

At least 17,000 people have been killed, mainly in Nigeria, and more than 2.5 million made homeless over the past six years due to the Boko Haram militancy.
