News in Brief

1. A powerful bomb explosion has rocked Turkey's capital Ankara killing at least 30 people and injuring some 130 others. The blast occurred ahead of a planned “peace” march, against the conflict between the government and Kurdish militants in southeastern Turkey. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

2. Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian in East Jerusalem al-Quds, accusing him of stabbing two Israelis. Elsewhere in Gaza, a young Palestinian succumbed to his wounds sustained in scuffles with Israeli forces on Friday. A total of 17 Palestinians have been killed over the past ten days.

3. Iran says Israel’s possession of nuclear arms is proof of double standards employed by certain countries. Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN Gholamali Khoshroo says Israel’s nuclear arsenal poses a serious threat to peace and security in the Middle East. Israel is believed to have hundreds of atomic warheads.

4. Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has offered his condolences on the death of a senior Iranian commander in Syria. In a message, Ayatollah Khamenei described Brigadier General Hossein Hamedani as a "veteran and hardworking" combatant. He was killed by ISIL during an advisory mission near Aleppo on Thursday.

5. No end in sight to Saudi Arabia’s bombardments of Yemen. Warplanes have pounded several areas in the provinces Ma’rib and Tai’zz. There are no reports of possible casualties. Nearly 6,500 Yemenis have been killed since the beginning of the Saudi onslaught in late March.

6. The EU Foreign Policy Chief says the foreign-fighter phenomenon in Syria and Iraq has turned the European Union into an exporter of terrorism. Federica Mogherini said EU citizens have often provoked violence in Iraq and Syria. Mogherini called for a unified strategy to tackle the ongoing conflicts.

7. Muslims in the US are bracing for anti-Islam demonstrations over the weekend. People are being encouraged to go to Islamic centers in some 20 cities and stage rallies. Reports say some protesters might be armed. Community leaders say they would not cancel the Friday Prayers but will take precautions.

8. Canada’s aboriginals have rallied in Montreal to bring attention to the plight of the country’s First Nations. The protesters criticized the political parties ignoring them. The rally comes ahead of legislative elections. Aboriginals make up 4.3 percent of Canada’s population.
