IOM: 7,000 asylum seekers arrive in Greece daily

Greece

The International Organization for Migration says the rate of refugee arrivals in Greece has risen dramatically over the past week.

The IOM said the number of asylum seekers entering eastern Greece has surged to 7,000 daily from about 4,500 at the end of September. The IOM spokesman said that the increase may be due to expected worsening weather conditions. Greece’s eastern island of Lesbos has been a main point of arrival for refugees and asylum seekers making the sea crossing from Turkey to reach the European Union. So far this year, more than 500,000 refugees, mostly fleeing war-torn Syria and Afghanistan, have crossed the Mediterranean to reach Europe. Under the EU's relocation plan, 120,000 refugees will be redistributed from Italy and Greece to other European countries.
