Carson: I’ll fight ‘insincere’ US media

US Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson speaks at the National Press Club in Washington on Friday.

US Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has declared a war on what he called “embarrassing” and “insincere” media outlets in the United States.

Speaking at a gathering of reporters and communications professionals at the National Press Club in Washington on Friday, Carson pledged to “expose” the institutional bias that runs rife among the American media.

“Many in the press will say I’m sensitive and that I should not be thinking about running for office, because I get offended by what they do,” he said. “But the reason I expose the press is because I want the people of America to understand what they’re doing. It’s not because I’m sensitive.”

The retired neurosurgeon said he would “continue to expose them every time they do something” in order to reveal the reality about them, believing this “will negate their affect.”

The ultimate goal is to make them “allies of the people,” said Carson who is angry with the US media over what he describes as a distortion of his views on guns and religion.

Following a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon that killed 10 people last week, Carson said he would have stood up to the gunman, had he been there.

But, many people misinterpreted the remarks, assuming that he meant the victims did not try to protect themselves.

“Everything needs to be looked at in context, and when news media picks one word or one phrase and they run with it and try to characterize people like that, I gotta tell you guys, that’s why people don’t trust you anymore,” Carson said. “I mean you’re down there with used car salesmen.”

Carson also talked about an occasion during which he a reporter approached him and asked a question, adding, he was getting on a bus at that time, so he could not answer him in full and this led to a story about him being unprepared to deal with the threat of a hurricane.

“I mean, this is the level of insincerity that we see, and it really is kind of embarrassing to see that,” he noted.
