China “seriously concerned” over reported US plan to send warships to South China Sea

China

China has expressed serious concerns about a report that the United States is planning to sail warships near one of its newly-built artificial islands in the South China Sea.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Beijing has long made clear its position on the South China Sea. She said China and the US have discussed the issue on numerous occasions. The comments were in reaction to a report citing a senior US official that American warships will sail within the next two weeks to the area to challenge Beijing’s South China Sea territorial claims. China accuses the US of meddling in regional issues and deliberately stirring up tensions in the region. The disputed territories, which are rich in oil and gas, are also claimed by five other countries.
