Clashes between policemen and protesting workers who demand the reinstatement of fired employees at a Nicaraguan gold mine have left one policeman dead and 31 injured.

The Canadian-run El Limon mine, affiliated with B2Gold Corporate, located 145 kilometers from the capital, Managua, witnessed clashes between miners and police on Wednesday, when one policeman was killed and 31 protesting miners were injured.

According to National police chief Aminta Granera, the officer was “beaten to death,” and several police and mine vehicles were destroyed.

Miners of B2Gold Corporate said the policeman died of a heart attack.

A local police station was set ablaze by the protesting miners and 15 officers were taken hostage.

The miners blocked the street by setting up barricades and inflicted significant material damage, according to a press statement.

“The blockade has halted access and increasingly threatened the safety of a notable majority of employees who want to continue working,” the mining company said.

Attempts to find a peaceful solution have not been successful so far.

Vancouver-based B2Gold Corporate, a gold producer with four operating mines (two in Nicaragua, one in the Philippines and one in Namibia) is now considering closing the mine altogether.
