Iran athletics teams claim Asia Pacific Deaf Games titles

Iranian national men’s and women’s athletics teams have finished in the first place at the eighth edition of the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Taiwan.

On Wednesday, the hearing-impaired Iranian squads, came first at the end of the athletics competitions, having collected 28 medals altogether, including eight golds, nine silvers and 11 bronzes.

Meanwhile, Iranian men's deaf futsal team kept its unblemished record at the eighth edition of the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Taiwan, and trounced the United Arab Emirates team for the second time in the space of a day.

The Iranian sportsmen began the Wednesday game at the National Taiwan Sport University Gymnasium in the northwestern Taiwanese district of Taoyuan on a high note, and chalked up a resounding 12-0 victory over the opposite side.

In an earlier encounter on Wednesday, the Iranian futsal players impressed the crowd with their emphatic performance and managed to stun their Japanese opponents 7-2.

Iran deaf basketballers slump to China

However, Iranian men's national deaf basketball team fell to China in its second match at the preliminary round of the 8th edition of the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Taiwan.

On Wednesday, the Iranian side suffered a 90-69 loss to Chinese basketball players in a game played at the Ming Chuan University Gymnasium.

The Chinese sportsmen got off to a strong start and accumulated enough points to claim the first quarter 16-11.

The Iranian side, however, came from behind in the second quarter, adding up points to their tally to eventually take the quarter 16-13.

The Chinese reclaimed the lead as the match extended into the third quarter. They mounted attacks to win most of the points and ultimately closed the quarter at 21-15.

The East Asians did not back down as the match went into the fourth quarter. The Persians sought to narrow the deficit as the clock ticked toward the final whistle, but China proved successful and clinched the final quarter by 19 points to 18. 

The eighth edition of the Asia Pacific Deaf Games opened in Taoyuan on October 3 and will finish on October 11.
