US policy in Syria deeply flawed, exposed by Russia: Analyst

The US has spent more than a year allegedly bombing Daesh in Syria and Iraq without significantly degrading its terrorist infrastructure, said Eric Draitser.

The US policy of fighting Daesh (ISIL) has been exposed as deeply flawed and cynical by Russia’s military intervention against that terrorist group in Syria, a geopolitical analyst in New York says.

The US has spent more than a year allegedly bombing Daesh in Syria and Iraq without significantly degrading the terror network’s infrastructure, while Russian airstrikes have made tangible progress in less than a week, said Eric Draitser, the founder of Stopimperialism.com.

“What Russia has tried to do is not merely intervene in the Syrian conflict, but rather to reverse the entire policy direction of the United States in the region, mainly the destruction of sovereign states and the replacement of those states with terrorism and with chaos,” Draitser said during a phone interview with Press TV on Saturday.

Unlike the US, “Russia is interested in bringing the [Syrian] parties to the table and coming up with a political solution,” he noted.

“All of this is really part of the long-term objective of Moscow, namely the de-escalation of this conflict through military involvement.”

Russia has been beefing up its military presence in Syria, deploying warplanes, tanks and personnel to an airfield in the western port city of Latakia.

Russia last week began coordinated airstrikes on militant positions in Syria. Moscow’s commitment to the Syrian government runs counter to current US policy, which calls for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Monday that Moscow is pursuing a "losing strategy" in Syria.

"Russia has escalated the civil war, putting further at risk the very political resolution and preservation of Syria's structure of future governance it says that it wants," Carter said in Madrid at the start of a five-day trip to Europe.

Draitser said that the United States will have “some countermoves” against Russia. “They are not simply going to take this lying down and see the last four and a half years of US policy vis-à-vis regime change in Syria be reversed overnight by the Russians.”
