GOP candidate asks US to allow Russia to deal with Daesh terrorists

Frontrunner Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says the United States should not raise a great hue and cry about Russia bombing Daesh (ISIL) positions in Syria and let Moscow “take care of” the terrorist network.

In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Trump asked the United States not to meddle in Syria and let the conflict shake out on its own. “This does not sound like me very much, but I want to sit back and I want to see what happens.”

“Let Syria and ISIS fight. Why can’t we let ISIS and Syria fight? Let Russia, they’re in Syria already, let them fight ISIS. Let Russia take care of ISIS. How many places can we be?” Trump said, referring to the terrorist group by another acronym.

He rejected calls by Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and GOP presidential candidate John Kasich for the US military to establish a no-fly zone over Syria to respond to Russian airstrikes against US-sponsored militants in Syria.

The businessman-turned-politician went on to predict that Syria would become a quagmire for Russia, citing the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan that contributed to the breakup of the Soviet Union. “It’s not going to be great for them if you want to know the truth.”

“I mean they essentially went bankrupt. It destroyed the Soviet Union,” he said of the 1979-89 Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. “Now they’re going into Syria, there are so many traps, there are so many problems.”

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. The United States and its regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria since the beginning of the crisis.

Russia has been beefing up its military presence in Syria, deploying warplanes, tanks and personnel to an airfield in the western port city of Latakia.

Russia launched its air campaign against Daesh terrorists in Syria on Wednesday. The airstrikes began hours after a warning that the US must take its warplanes out of Syria.
