Iran can export 2.3bn cubic meters of gas to Armenia annually: Official

Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company Alireza Kameli

Managing director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) says the country is ready to increase natural gas exports to Armenia.

Alireza Kameli made the remarks in an interview with Iranian Oil Ministry's official SHANA news agency following a meeting between Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh and the visiting Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Yervand Zakharyan in Tehran on Sunday.

He added that the pipeline taking Iran's gas to Armenia is capable of transmitting more than six million cubic meters of natural gas per day, but is currently taking only one million cubic meters of gas to Iran's northern neighbor.

“Since necessary infrastructure is lacking in Armenia, the country is currently unable to take full advantage of the capacity of the pipeline,” Kameli said.

The Iranian official stated that Armenia is currently planning to build a new 400-kilovolt power transmission line in addition to a combined-cycle power plant and has asked Iran to supply the natural gas that it needs to get the plant going.

Earlier on Sunday, Zakharyan met and conferred with Iran's Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh in Tehran.

Following the meeting, Zangeneh told reporters that the two countries have discussed increased gas exports from Iran to Armenia.

He added that Iran's First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri has been invited by the Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan to pay a visit to the country in the near future.

According to SHANA, Tehran and Yerevan signed an official agreement for the export of Iran's gas to Armenia in 2004.

Based on the agreement, Iran's natural gas is used by Armenian power plants to generate electricity and in return, Armenia exports electricity to Iran.
