Trust in US media remains at historic low: Survey

Six in 10 Americans say they have little or no confidence in the mass media, according to a Gallup survey.

The majority of Americans have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately and fairly, according to a new survey.

Four in 10 Americans surveyed by Gallup said they have “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of trust and confidence in the mass media and the rest said their trust ranges from “not very much” to “none at all.”

Only 7 percent of respondents said they have a “great deal” of trust and confidence that the mass media reports the news accurately.

This ties with the historic lows measured by the Gallup in 2014 and 2012.

Trust in the US media has drifted downward over the past decade. Prior to 2014, a slight majorities of Americans said they trusted the mass media, such as newspapers, TV and radio.

Gallup trend shows that trust has been particularly low in election years, including 2004, 2008, 2012 and last year.

Trust in the media is significantly lower among young and middle-aged Americans (ages 18 to 49), according to the survey.

Some of the factors that have eroded Americans’ trust and confidence in the government and other institutions may also be at work with the media, said Rebecca Riffkin, a Gallup analyst.

However, some of the loss may have been self-inflicted, as major news organizations have been caught making serious mistakes in the past several years, she noted.
