Iran volleyball team edges past Oman in CISM World Games

The sixth edition of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) World Games started in Mungyeong, South Korea, on October 2 and will wrap up on October 11.

Iranian men’s volleyball team has registered its first victory at the preliminary round of the sixth edition of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) World Games in South Korea, defeating the Omani side in a thrilling five-set match.

Iranian sportsmen outclassed their opponents 3-2 in a competitive game at the Gimcheon Indoor Stadium in the eastern South Korean city of Mungyeong on Sunday.

The Omanis started the match with vigor and valor, and dominated the first set. They finished the first set 25-21.

But the Iranian volleyball players came back from behind to win the second set 25-10.

The Omani team, however, managed to regain the lead and claimed the third set 25-22.

The Iranian squad asserted its dominance and continued to exert a good spell of pressure on the opposite side as the match went into the fourth set and clinched it 25-22.

The Iranians did not relinquish in the last and deciding set and established their overwhelming superiority to chalk up a 15-7 victory.

Iran will play against Qatar in its second encounter at the preliminary round of the CISM World Games on Monday.

The Islamic Republic has been pitted against Oman, Qatar and South Korea and Canada in Group A of the tournament. Brazil, Egypt, China, India and Venzuela form Group B.

Russia leads the standings with seven medals, including two golds, one silver and four bronzes. Brazil is in the second slot with three medals – two golds and one silver. The Chinese athletes rank third, having won two gold and one bronze medals.
