Japanese citizen killed in Bangladesh attack claimed by Daesh
A Japanese national has been killed by suspected gunmen in a town in northern Bangladesh just days after an Italian citizen was shot dead in an assault claimed by the Takfiri Daesh terror group, police said.
"A Japanese man was shot dead in the remote town of Kaunia today. He was travelling to the town on a cycle rickshaw when his vehicle was stopped by three men riding on a motorcycle," said deputy police chief of Rangpur City, Saifur Rahman, as quoted in an AFP report on Saturday.
The victim was shot at close range, according to Rahman, who further added, "They shot him there and drove away. His body has been brought to the morgue of Rangpur Medical College."
The fatal attack occurred less than a week after an Italian aid worker was also murdered by armed assailants near the diplomatic zone of Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
This is while the government has sought to relieve growing safety fears across the impoverished nation after Daesh terrorists claimed responsibility for the Saturday killing, referring to the attack as an "isolated incident.”
Meanwhile, the Japanese victim of the shooting has yet to be identified, but has been described by the police official as being aged between 55 and 60 who worked for a farming project in Rangpur, located nearly 300 kilometers north of the capital city of Dhaka.
According to the report, International schools in Bangladesh have temporarily shut down while Western embassies have “restricted” the movements of their diplomats. Additionally, Australia's cricket team has also cancelled a scheduled tour of the South Asian nation over security concerns.
