Russia 'out-gamed' US in Syria, says Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney, the 2012 US Republican presidential candidate and former Governor of Massachusetts, has fiercely criticized President Barrack Obama’s foreign policy, saying that the US has been "out-gamed" by Russia in Syria.

"Russia complicates things right now and Russia has out-gamed us once again,” Romney said at the Washington Ideas Forum on Wednesday.

"We're in a difficult position right now," he said. "His [Obama’s] rhetoric is soaring, but the results have been terribly disappointing; and his foreign policy – disastrous."

Romney further said that he prefers Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, because “he at least believed that America should be a leader.”

Obama defeated Romney in the 2012 US presidential election and became president for a second 4 year term.

Romney also referred to Democratic presidential contender and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's proposed strategy of training and arming so-called “moderate” militants in Syria to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

"Even Hillary Clinton said we should coalesce leadership among the rebel forces in Syria, we should arm them, we should train them, we should support them and help them defeat Assad. We did not do that.”

Romney also suggested that the US should continue with airstrikes against Daesh, also known as ISIL or ISIS.

"At this stage, I believe you do have to concentrate on eliminating ISIS. You don't let the Russians tell us that we can't fly over Syria," he said.

Romney's fiery remarks came after Russia began airstrikes against Daesh targets in Syria on Wednesday.

Russian jets also attacked foreign-backed terrorists in Syria’s central province of Homs on Thursday.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov, Moscow has deployed more than 50 military aircraft to Syria.

This is Moscow’s biggest Middle East intervention in decades, and it has taken the years-long conflict in Syria to a whole new level.

US officials and media allege that the air raids have hit civilians and non-Daesh targets in the Arab country, a claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed.

"When it comes to media reports regarding the suffering of the civilian population, we are ready for this information warfare," Putin said on Thursday.
