Three people have been arrested in Malaysia on suspicion of planning terror attacks in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

According to police and local media, a Syrian, an Indonesian national as well as a Malaysian were taken into custody on Friday, all suspected of planning to carry out terror attacks against domestic and foreign targets.

The arrests were made a day after the US and Australian embassies warned their citizens to avoid Jalan Alor, a popular tourist area in central Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday due to an unspecified security threat.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said in a statement that “the detainees were planning to attack important national assets, Western assets and public spots.”

According to the statement, “The operation is a result from information obtained from suspects arrested previously.”

Authorities in Kuala Lumpur say dozens of Malaysian nationals have traveled to Syria in recent years, where they have joined the ranks of Takfiri Daesh militants.

Over the past year, Malaysian police have detained numerous people on suspicion of being Daesh supporters.
