At least 22 people have been killed and over a dozen others injured in a highway accident in China’s southern province of Hunan.

The crash took place when a truck slammed through the highway guardrail into an oncoming bus and two other vehicles near the city of Xiangtan, Xinhua reported on Friday.

The front of the truck and the bus burst into flames, the agency added.

The remains of the victims were said to be badly burned, making initial confirmation of the toll difficult.

China's roads are notoriously dangerous, with traffic regulations often flouted and long-distance buses overcrowded.

The World Health Organization reported in May that more than 200,000 people are killed annually in road accidents in China. Official government statistics are said to be lower.
