Iran volleyballers lose to Canada in FIVB World Cup

Canada men's national volleyball team has beaten Iran in straight sets at the third round of the 2015 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Cup, which is currently underway in Japan.

The Iranian volleyball squad lost to Canada 23-25, 27-29, and 24-26 on Tuesday at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in the Japanese capital to give the Canadian team its second victory of the round following a 3-0 (25–18, 25–22 and 25–23) win over Venezuela the previous day.

Shahram Mahmoudi led Iran with 20 points and Mojtaba Mirzajanpour added 10, while John Gordon Perrin was the high-scorer for Canada with 13 points.

In the other matches of the day, Egypt downed Venezuela 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-20) and Australia breezed past Tunisia 3-0 (25–19, 25-17 and 25-19).

Poland is on the top of the standings with 29 points, the United States is second with two points less, and Italy sits in the third place with 26 points. Iran is in the eighth place with nine points from three victories.

The Islamic Republic is scheduled to take on Egypt men's national volleyball team on Wednesday.

The 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup started in Japan on September 8, and will finish on September 23.

The tournament is a qualification process for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The top two teams will qualify for the Olympics and join Brazil, which has already secured a berth as the host country.
