Iran volleyball team loses to US in FIVB U21 world championship
Young Iranian volleyball players have sustained another defeat at the classification round for the 9th to 12th place at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship in Mexico, going down to the US squad.
The Iranian side slumped 2-3 (18-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-12 and 10-15) to the American team in a match played at the Auditorio del Estado indoor arena in the northwestern Mexican city of Mexicali on Sunday.
The Americans made a sound start and applied a spell of pressure on the Iranian side to accumulate points, despite some fightback from the Persians, and eventually clinch the set 25-18.
The US volleyball players carried on the momentum and won the next set 25-18 just like the previous one.
In the third set, the Iranians rebounded from losses in the first and second sets, and brought the game under control to pull off a 25-21 victory.
The Iranian sportsmen maintained the lead in the fourth set, and rolled to a 25-12 win at last.
The US squad came from behind in the deciding fifth set and ultimately captured a 15-10 win.
John Hatch finished as the match’s top scorer with 14 points, followed by Iran’s Salim Cheperli with 11 tallies.
The 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship opened in the Mexican cities of Tijuana and Mexicali on September 11, and finished on September 20.
Russia won the title after defeating Argentina 3-2. China came third beating Brazil 3-1. Iran finished in the twelfth place.
