Serbia has warned neighboring Croatia to either open its border or face retaliation after Croats halted all cargo traffic from Serbia.

The Serbian government has called an emergency session for Tuesday to discuss possible counter-measures against Croatia.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday that "due to violations of numerous bilateral and international agreements, we will be forced to protect our country by legal means."

"That will hit their country far harder than their measures are hurting ours," he further threatened.

Meanwhile, Serbian Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic has told the state television that "there is no rational, logical explanation for stopping the flow of goods, of cargo traffic, on one of the main arteries.”

"Closing that route is inflicting millions in damage to Serbian business and the state every day," he added.

Croatia closed its border with Serbia, preventing all traffic from entering into the country since last week.

The blockage created a 12-kilometer line of trucks on the Serbian side.

According to Croatian authorities, more than 30,000 refugees, many of them Syrian, have entered the country from Serbia since Tuesday last week.

Croatia says it is bearing the brunt of the influx of refugees after Hungary built a metal fence barring the entry of asylum-seekers coming into its territory from Serbia.

Zagreb has been complaining to other European Union (EU) member states that it cannot cope with the large numbers of refugees.

Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic told Germany’s RTL television late on Monday that "I think it is perfectly clear that what we are seeing is organized transport of migrants directly to Croatia (from Serbia)."

Many of the refugees heading to the EU are fleeing wars and poverty in the Middle East and Africa. They mostly seek to go to Germany or Scandinavia.
