Iran says Saudi Arabia’s recent targeting of the Omani ambassador’s residence in the Yemeni capital with a military strike shows that Riyadh cannot even tolerate the activities of such a famously peace-loving nation as Oman.

“Oman’s constructive role in the Yemeni crisis has been praised by various institutions and the international community numerous times,” said Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Saturday.

Referring to the Saudi attack on the Omani envoy’s residence in Sana’a, Afkham said, “With this hateful and unjustifiable act, the [Saudi-led] coalition forces proved they do not tolerate even the humanitarian measures of a country like Oman, which is endeavoring to mitigate the human catastrophe in Yemen in full coordination with the International Red Cross and the United Nations (UN).”

In a Saturday statement, Oman’s Foreign Ministry slammed Saudi Arabia’s bombardment of the residence of Omani ambassador in Sana’a, Bader al Mantheri, saying the attack runs contrary to international law.

In similar remarks, Afkham, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, also strongly condemned the Saudi attack and said it is in contravention of international laws regarding the immunity of diplomatic sites.

She also called on international organizations, particularly the UN, to promptly act to end the war on Yemen as well as the violation by aggressor forces of forbidden targets such as non-military and diplomatic sites.

Saudi Arabia began its military aggression against Yemen on March 26 – without a UN mandate – in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

Some reports say the conflict has so far left about 5,200 people dead and thousands of others wounded.
