Corbyn: Conservative government declaring war on organized labour

British opposition Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn gestures as he speaks at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Brighton, south-east England, on September 15, 2015. Britain

Britain's Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn says the Conservatives are declaring war on organized labour.

Addressing trade unionists, Corbyn promised to fight Conservative legislation currently passing through Parliament which raises the legal threshold for unions to conduct strikes.

Critics dismiss the legislation as an attempt by the government to undermine unions’ power.

"We will fight this bill all the way, and if it becomes law we will repeal it in 2020," he said, referring to the date of the next national election.

He went on adding: “They are declaring war on organized labour… Basically the Conservative government seems to still think it is right just to attack trade unions just because they exist."

It was Corbyn’s first major public speech since winning control of the opposition Labour Party. He swept to victory on Saturday mainly due to his anti-austerity and anti-war policies.
