Tehran, Kuwait City determined to upgrade ties: Iranian official

A senior Iranian official says the Islamic Republic and Kuwait are determined to expand their bilateral cooperation.

Speaking to IRNA on Monday, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian described Tehran-Kuwait ties as “constructive.”

He said that, with regards to bilateral ties and regional matters, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah take wise and prudent action for the establishment of stability in the region.

‘Regional dialog welcome’

The Iranian official said extremists and enemies will not be allowed to make mischief between regional countries.

He said Tehran welcomes bilateral and multilateral dialogue on regional issues.

The administration of President Rouhani has on several occasions stressed that enhancing relations with Iran’s regional neighbors is a foreign policy priority.

High-profile bilateral visits

Tehran and Kuwait have maintained close diplomatic relations.

The Kuwaiti emir visited Iran for the first time in June 2014, when he discussed key bilateral and regional issues with senior Iranian officials.

Following the historic visit by Kuwait’s emir to Iran, the two countries signed six agreements to strengthen cooperation in the fields of transportation, security, customs, sports, tourism and the environment.

Earlier in July, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif traveled to Kuwait on a three-nation tour that also took him to Qatar and Iraq.
