The European Union (EU) has extended its sanctions on Russian officials and entities, saying the Ukraine-related bans will persist for another six-month period.

The EU on Monday renewed a visa ban and asset freeze imposed on a number of close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin and others, whom the 28-nation body describes as having a major role in an ongoing crisis in east Ukraine.

It said in a statement about Ukraine and Russia's role there that the “assessment of the situation did not justify a change in the regime of sanctions.”

The EU blacklist currently includes 149 people and 37 entities, most of them affected by a similar measure from Washington. The Monday renewal came in close coordination with Washington which recently added some new people and organizations to its list of its Russia sanctions.

Russia and the West have been at loggerheads over Ukraine since an armed conflict broke out there in March 2014. The US and allies accuse Moscow of backing the pro-Russians operating in the east of the country, saying Moscow provides weapons and training to them. Russia denies the charges, saying it only supports the ethnic Russian population living in the area against what it calls continued suppression by the government in Kiev.

A truce deal reached in February in the Belarusian capital of Minsk has failed to effectively reduce the hostilities, with the pro-Russia and the government forces pledging anew to implement the terms of the ceasefire from September 1.
