Colombia and Venezuela have agreed to resuscitate diplomatic relations that were broken off by a recent border crisis between the two South American countries.

Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin and her Venezuelan counterpart, Delcy Rodriguez, met in the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito on Saturday.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino and his Uruguayan counterpart Rodolfo Nin Novoa, whose governments have been pushing officials in Bogota and Caracas to set aside their differences, were also present at Saturday’s meeting.

According to a final joint statement read by Patino, the top Colombian and Venezuelan diplomats made “satisfactory advances” in dealing with “sensitive issues,” and will consult with their respective leaders about plans for a presidential meeting to fully resolve the border crisis.

An earlier meeting between Holguin and Rodriguez on August 26 did not bear any fruit.

Bogota and Caracas have been in a spiraling row since last month, when Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro closed part of the two country’s common border.

The decision came after three Venezuelan soldiers were attacked by gunmen while performing an anti-smuggling operation in city of San Antonio in the state of Tachira on April 19.

Ambassadors from the two Latin American states were recalled following the border spat, resulting in the deportation of some 1,500 Colombians living in Venezuela.

The 2,200-kilometer (1,400-mile) border between the two neighbors is rife with guerrilla and smuggling activities.
