Imposing of decisions on Syrians dangerous, inadmissible: Russia

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov

Any attempt by foreign parties to impose decisions on Syrian people, whose country has been experiencing a deadly crisis for over four years, is perilous and unacceptable, the Kremlin spokesman says.

"We think that it is inadmissible and dangerous to impose from outside any decisions upon the Syrian people,"  Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Saturday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has frequently stressed that Syrians should themselves determine their country's destiny, Peskov said.

Answering a question about US President Barack Obama’s recent remarks describing Moscow’s strategy toward Syria a mistake, the Russian officials noted, "Criticism of Russia’s consistent stance on the Syria crisis is not something new."

Peskov further stressed that no one has been able to suggest a reasonable solution to end the crisis in Syria and ensure security in the country except for supporting “the acting legitimate government of Syria.”

On Friday, Obama warned Russia against the continuation of arming the Syrian government in fight against Takfiri terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL).
"The strategy they're pursuing right now of doubling down on [Syrian President Bashar] Assad is a mistake,” Obama said.

Moscow and Washington have had major differences over the conflict in Syria. While the Kremlin lends support to Damascus, the White House wants to see Assad’s ouster.

Also on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged members of the so-called international coalition against Daesh in Iraq and Syria to cooperate with the Syrian armed forces.

Lavrov said it is impossible to defeat Daesh “with airstrikes only," adding, “It's necessary to cooperate with ground troops, and the Syrian army is the most efficient and powerful ground force to fight” the terrorists.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.

The violence has forced over four million Syrians to take refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon. More than 7.2 million others have also been displaced within Syria, according to the United Nations.
