Nearly one third of Americans could imagine supporting a military coup d'état against their own government in the United States, according to a new survey.

The YouGov poll found that 29 percent of people in the US could imagine supporting the overthrow of the American government.

The survey also showed that 43 percent of Republicans would support a military overthrow, while 20 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of independents would.

YouGov conducts online polls about politics, public affairs, products, brands and other topics of general interest. It surveyed 1,000 people online on the issue.

When “asked whether they would hypothetically support the military stepping in to take control from a civilian government which is beginning to violate the Constitution,” 43 percent of respondents said “yes” and 29 percent said “no.”

The poll comes as Americans' satisfaction with the direction of the United States continues to fall as they remain worried about government dysfunction and the country’s economic problems.

Only 26 percent of Americans are currently satisfied with the way things are going in their country, down from 30 percent in July, a Gallup survey released last week shows.

Generally, less than 30 percent of Americans have expressed satisfaction with the country's direction since 2007, an extraordinarily long spell of low satisfaction when compared with Gallup's full trend since 1979.

Americans name the economy in general, dissatisfaction with the government and unemployment or jobs as the most important problems facing the country and the main reasons for their lack of satisfaction.

US satisfaction levels have averaged no higher than 27 percent in any full year during President Barack Obama’s time in office, the longest stretch of low satisfaction of any of the past four two-term American presidents.
