Iran welcomes Iraq sustainable democracy: Larijani

The speaker of Iran's parliament (Majlis) has commended "sustainable democracy" in Iraq under the aegis of national unity government in the war-wracked country.

"We are happy that today Iraq has managed to establish a sustainable democracy under the aegis of a national unity government and the participation of all groups and factions in the country," Ali Larijani said in a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Salim al-Jabouri on Saturday.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been on the side of the Iraqi nation and government on this course," Larijani added.

He also praised Tehran-Baghdad ties as close, friendly, cordial and effective.

Larijani also said that he held good talks in his meeting with his Iraqi counterpart on the promotion of trade and cultural ties as well as the campaign against terrorists.

Jabouri, for his part, said that Tehran and Baghdad play a significant role in establishing security in the Middle East region and face common threats such as terrorism, which requires their cooperation. 

He also said Iraq needs Iran's cooperation in its fight against Daesh Takfiri terrorist group which has been wreaking havoc in the Arab country.

The Iraqi parliament speaker arrived in Tehran on Saturday to hold talks with Iranian officials on a host of issues.

During his stay in Tehran, the Iraqi official also plans to sit down with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
